Walk through any city street late at night you’ll always see people taking refuge in doorways, under bridges, bus stops, train stations, parks and just about anywhere else which offers a dry spot to call a bed for the night. A stray cardboard box from a nearby restaurant offers a mattress to keep your body off the cold concrete which saps the warmth from your bones. Rags, soiled clothes, and matted blankets are scavenged to insulate against biting winds. It’s an indignity, and one which affects the fundamental rights of any human: the right to safe shelter.

On the Census night of 2016, over 116,000 people were homeless in Australia. For a large company with 10,000 employees, that would mean 50 of them are sleeping rough.

This is an issue which IGNITE Alliance’s CEO, Wayne Banks, feels very strongly about.

They say charity begins at home, but there are still so many homeless people out on the streets,” Wayne laments.

“We call Australia The Lucky Country, yet we still have homeless people all over this wide brown land. And we really need to do more.”

That’s why on the 21st of June, Wayne will be participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout on behalf of IGNITE Alliance this year.

"This is an initiative I have been supporting and close to for many years. One of my previous CEO's from UXC, Ian Poole, was a participant for many years and I saw how all the staff and clients really rallied behind him," Wayne disclosed.

"I recall Ian coming to the office the morning after one CEO sleepout back in about 2011, for an internal management meeting, unshaven and looking a little tired, but it was very inspirational for the entire team at work."

The Vinnies CEO sleepout is a great way for Senior Executives of businesses all over Australia to really experience the other side - if only for one night. The charity does an amazing job in helping the homeless and this sleepout is a very small way CEOs, their friends, family and staff can all band together to support this great cause.

Wayne told the team at IGNITE a story where he was once walking on the very cold streets of Melbourne and saw a homeless couple. He did what most people do and walk on by.
But then a thought stopped him right in his tracks. He knew these people were doing it tough, that they’d be cold, probably hungry, and this was maybe the lowest point in their lives. And he knew he had the means to at least offer some means of comfort and kindness.
He walked back to them, reached into his pocket and pulled out 20 bucks. He gave that money  to them and their eyes lit up.
“They thanked me, and I walked away.” Wayne recalls.

Just near the homeless couple was a coffee cart that he stopped at and bought a coffee.
“No mate, it's free.” The barista quietly said.
“Oh, why?”  Wayne responded.
“‘Cause I just saw what you did for those homeless people.”
Wayne said that feeling was indescribable.

At IGNITE Alliance, we have a passion for the community. Our core values need us to challenge ourselves, to ask how can we add real change and value to the community that we live in. How we can give back, and how we can make a positive impact.

So please donate. We would really appreciate your support, donating even just $50 will make a massive difference to those who need it the most in our society.
